Speed up reviewing with sorting & filtering

Reviewing just got easier than ever! Now, you can sort transactions by date or status on the transactions page by clicking on the column header.

Whether you want to start with the oldest transactions to ensure nothing gets missed or see the most recent first, you can pick the order that works best for you. Ember will remember your sorting preference when you come back.

We’ve also expanded our filtering options. In addition to filtering by date, you can filter by status and category, making it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for. Effortless reviewing, just the way it should be! 🎉

Sole Traders knowing how much to pay

We’re excited to announce a small but impactful update to the Self Assessment experience for sole traders. We have introduced a new “Pay” button on the Self Assessment page, which opens a dedicated page showing the exact amount due to be paid if Ember has submitted your Self Assessment return for you. This streamlined view should help make your Self Assessment process smoother and more transparent whenever you have a payment deadline to meet. 🧮

Introducing AI Reporting ✨

Shared by Aaron • December 11, 2024

Hey there,

I’m super excited to announce the launch of AI reporting — a game-changing new feature that allows you to access an up-to-date picture of your business finances from the moment you open Ember.

At Ember, our mission is to help a generation of business owners unlock their full potential.

To truly unlock that potential, we believe having access to an accurate, up-to-date picture of your business finances is absolutely essential.

Since launching the first version of Ember a few years back, we have helped thousands of business owners gain a more complete understanding of their finances by providing easy access to key insights—ranging from how much tax you owe to how much you can safely withdraw from your business.

However, until now, getting an up to date version of these insights, has required you to first fully review every transaction.

AI Reporting allows you to access these insights in real-time

Over the past year, we have observed the rapid evolution of AI models and more recently we have been leveraging this progress to significantly enhance our own ability to predict the tax category of a given transaction.

We are still only at the start of this journey, but the improvements we are already seeing in both the coverage and accuracy of our predictions are what really form the foundation for AI Reporting.

This powerful new feature integrates transactions automatically categorised by Ember AI into your reports, alongside those you’ve already reviewed and categorised.

The result is a much more complete and current picture of your business finances, allowing you to make faster, more informed decisions about your business.

For any transactions we’re unsure of, we will of course still ask for your input to ensure the insights we provide accurately reflect your business’s position.

However, Ember AI is designed to continuously learn and improve as it gets to know your business better. While some initial input might be required, our ambition is for this to decrease over time, ultimately trending toward zero for most businesses and enabling a truly automated experience.

Experience AI Reporting today 🚀

AI Reporting will be available to all Limited Companies today — we’re eager to hear your feedback! As you use it, you’ll see firsthand how Ember AI adapts to your needs, delivering a smarter, faster, and easier financial experience.

To enable it, check out our help article here.

We can’t wait to hear what you think.

Exciting Update: New Category Changes Are Live + What’s Next! 🎉

We’re thrilled to share that the second phase of our transaction categorisation improvements is now live! 🚀 If you missed the details about these updates, click here to read about how we’ve streamlined categories to make managing your transactions simpler and smarter.

Now, let’s talk about what’s next: we’re refining our payroll categories to pave the way for more automated and accurate payroll reconciliations. These changes will make it easier to understand payroll-related entries while setting the foundation for even more advanced improvements in the future.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • Name change Pension Contributions OwedPension contributions due (Balance Sheet report) PAYE & NI Owed to HMRCPAYE & NI due (Balance Sheet report)
  • Name and context change Employer Pension ContributionsEmployee & employer pensions (Profit & Loss report) Employer National InsurancePAYE & NI (Profit & Loss report)

What You Need to Know

1️⃣ For now, these are purely name changes—you won’t see any changes to how payroll entries are generated just yet.

2️⃣ In the next phase, we’ll enhance payroll entry generation by introducing the new Salary & wages (take home) category to replace the Director salaries & wages and Employee salaries & wages categories (Profit & Loss report) . Additionally we’ll use the changes to category context for a more streamlined process.

We’re committed to making payroll management faster, clearer, and more intuitive for you. This update is another step in that direction, and we’re excited for you to see the results!

If you have any questions about these changes or need assistance, our team is here to help. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to enhance your experience with smarter, more automated tools.

Here’s to taking control of your finances with ease! 💼✨

🎉 Groups Are Here

Exciting news — transactions grouping is now live! You can now breeze through reviews, helping you save time on admin and focus on what matters most — running your business. We built this feature with your feedback in mind, so give it a try and let us know what you think!

📊 Dashboard chart updates

We know cash is king 👑, and having an accurate picture of your cash flow is crucial. That’s why we’ve updated the cash graph on your dashboard to give you a clearer, more reliable view of your in-flows and out-flows.

Previously, transfers between your accounts were included in the “money-in” and “money-out” bars, which we know didn’t always reflect true cash movements. Thanks to your feedback, we’ve made a change: transfers between accounts will no longer affect these bars. 🧮

Bonus update: To ensure everything adds up perfectly, credit card transactions are now included in your cash bars, too.

This update ensures your cash flow graph is more intuitive and reflective of your actual cash movements—because managing your money should be simple and accurate.

You can change your email now ✨

We know, we know… this one’s been a long time coming! We’re proud (and maybe a little sheepish) to announce that you can finally change your email address in Ember. Need to update to something more professional? Finally giving up on that old “[email protected]”? No judgment here – go ahead and make the change.

To find out how, check out our email update help article. If you’re already using Google authentication to log in, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. You can read our Google login settings guide to make any changes you need. 💅

Bank connection updates 🔌

  • We’ve rebuilt the bank connection flow for a smoother experience. The modal through which you connect bank accounts and the screens that follow once the accounts are connected are all brand new. If it’s your first time connecting a bank account, you’ll also notice tips on how to optimise your taxes while it loads!
  • Mettle bank connections are now supported in Ember.

Fixes 🔧

  • We recently released a new VAT Settings page, and after releasing it, we noticed an issue with the Save button being disabled overzealously; we’ve updated the validations on that page so they place nicely, unblocking you to make changes if your business’s VAT circumstances change.

We're making transaction categorisation easier and faster for you! 💅

We know categorising transactions can be a time-consuming part of managing your finances, and we’re here to tackle that. This is the start of a journey to make categorisation more intuitive and efficient with changes to how categories are structured and named, making it easier for both you and our system to identify where each transaction belongs.

In this first phase, you’ll notice a simple update; we’re renaming a few of our categories. This change only impacts Limited Liability businesses. We’ll be releasing updates for Sole Traders too, but not during this initial phase. Listed below are the current names and the new names they’ll transform into:

  • Rent & Rates → Rent & use of home
  • Accumulated Depreciation on Assets → Accumulated depreciation
  • Money Owed to Suppliers → Money you owe to suppliers
  • Credit Cards → Credit card balance

These new names are designed to make choosing categories quicker and more straightforward. Behind the scenes, this update is part of a larger effort to improve how our system learns from your categorisation choices, ultimately reducing the need for manual adjustments in the future.

We expect this change to be visible next week, so we wanted to make sure you got a heads-up first 👀

As we continue with the next phases, we’ll keep you updated on even BIGGER and more EXCITING enhancements to save you time and make transaction categorisation feel seamless. Stay tuned for more! 😎

  • As part of our Building a Better Ember initiative, the revamped VAT settings area allows you to easily manage and update your VAT status. We've also improved the connection to HMRC, ensuring your submissions are seamless. 🧮
  • You can now manually mark your P11D, P60 and Confirmation Statement tasks as done.✅ While these tasks do automatically move to Done, we’ve heard feedback (and seen ourselves) that the events we rely on (which we receive from the payroll integration and Companies House) are sometimes delayed by a few days. Now you can select the task, receive more context on how it works, and mark it as done if you no longer want it there. 💅
